Atlee High School is a four year, public high school, in Mechanicsville, VA, a suburban middle class residential community as part of the greater Metro-Richmond Area. Since 1992, the orchestra program has been growing steadily, performing a range of concerts, and has had graduates of the program go into music performance and music education at institutions such as The Cleveland Institute of Music, William and Mary College, Virginia Commonwealth Univeristy, James Madison University, George Mason University, and many more. The orchestra is very proud to have had two salutatorians and two valedictorians participate in our program all four years of their high school career.
The program is comprised of two orchestras- The Atlee String Ensemble and the Atlee Chamber Orchestra. Each groups performs four main concerts each year- Fall, Winter, District Festival, and Spring. Both orchestras are proud to showcase the orchestra program as part of our "Tiny Tots Concert", held each December for Hanover's elementary school children. And in recent years, the orchestra has worked with the Chickahominy Middle School orchestras, Hanover elementary orchestra programs, Lee-Davis High School Orchestra, and Stonewall Jackson Middle School Orchestra, to perform with Mark Wood, as part of the Electrify Your Strings Concerts. Several of our top students perform in small chamber ensembles too, serving the needs of various celebrations, graduation, ceremonies, and art shows.
The Atlee Orchestra program has consistently performed with honors at the local District Festival and regional compeititions, earning Superior and Excellent Ratings.
Each year, both orchestras combine as one to travel to a music destination to explore our country's best music and arts scenes. In years past, the orchestras have visited and performed in Disneyworld, Boston, Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, New York, Washington D.C/Baltimore, and Virginia Beach.
The ensemble is open to any high school string player who has played for at least 3 years. If a student has less experience, please contact Mrs. Jones, Director of Orchestras.
